For the past 11 weeks from 6:45-5 I have gone to clinical were I have worked with many different people and I have witnessed many different things! I have seen grumpy, hopeless and a little bit of crazy! But my absolute favorite thing I have seen is love! I learned that a little bit of love can really go a long way!
Monday was my last day of clinical and my classmates and I were tired and more than ready to call it a day! At this point we had mastered out physical assessment, we could hang IV bags with ease and we could do accu-checks in our sleep! I personally was no longer afraid of waking up my clients and could answer most of my teachers question before she had a chance to ask them! It was a successful clinical experience!
It was coming close to lunch time and my stomach was growling. I was filling out my documentation when a visitor came in accompanied by who seemed to be her mother. They were walking toward a grumpy gentleman (who we will call Mr. G ) who looked like he needed some coffee and some sun to cheer him up! Come to find out the first woman was Mr. G’s daughter and she had brought a “surprise” for him. When I tell you that Mr. G light up when he saw the woman (who we will call Ms. M) behind his daughter that would be an understatement! It was like that moment in Hercules when Hercules goes down into the underworld to rescue Megara and he turned into a god! Remember how he started to glow from his godliness and he was shining like the sun! That was Mr. G in this moment! It was like this Ms. M had brought all of his strength back and Mr. G was now invincible! Ms. M slowly walked toward Mr. G with her little walker with the biggest smile on her face and when she was within arm’s reach Mr. G grabbed a hold of her and pulled her in for the deepest longest embrace I have ever seen in real life!!! It was like that magical scene in the notebook when they were kissing in the rain! They kissed for what seemed like eons! It was like young love right before my eyes! Mr. G stated that his heart was going pitter patter just by the sight of Ms. M! It was absolutely beautiful! I couldn’t stop smiling and blushing by the love that I was seeing! The daughter noticed that I was admiring this moment and she came and had a chat with me. Come to find out that Mr. G and Ms. M had only been dating for two years they had meet one another at a retirement home and they had been at each other’s side ever since! Mr. G who was once Mr. Grumpypants had instantly turned into Mr. GloriousDay!
I am so happy I was able to witness that on my last day of clinical because it showed me that the smallest things can change someone’s day. A smile, a gentle touch, a chat in the sun or a visit from the one they love! As I sit here getting ready to study for finals that moment will be in the back of my mind reminding me that I am going into nursing because I know that every day I can touch someone’s heart and someone can touch mine! Now rise to the occasion and get out there and see whose day you can turn around!
